| YCC-S Question and Answers |
I’ve always owned a motorcycle with a manual gearbox. What are the benefits of YCC-S? |
YCC-S uses a conventional gearbox, but the clutch is chip-controlled electronically. YCC-S was designed to eliminate the fatigue of operating the clutch, and put more emphasis on comfort and enjoyment of the ride, particularly on long trips, in traffic and whilst carrying a pillion. It does this whilst still rewarding the rider with superb acceleration, great feel and unrivalled feedback. |

Is it just like riding an automatic scooter? |
No. The FJR1300AS is not an automatic transmission. Its gear shifting mechanism is more like an F1 racing car’s than a scooter’s. You make the choice of traditional foot shift or hand shift and you choose precisely when you want to shift up or down the slick five-speed gearbox. You just don’t ever need to pull a clutch lever. |

Who will benefit from YCC-S? |
Many riders benefit from this advanced gear shifting system technology. Riders who regularly travel in busy urban centres will arrive less physically tired as they won’t have had to constantly engage and disengage the clutch. Tourers can relax and enjoy the sensation of riding the world’s best roads. |

Does it feel different compared with a conventional motorcycle? |
Any change will of course feel different to begin with, but as YCC-S is such a discreet and easy system to use, your riding will adjust quickly. YCC-S is designed to add to, not dilute, your riding experience. The FJR1300AS was developed using Yamaha’s Art of Engineering philosophy, using cutting-edge technology which improves the man-machine riding experience giving an innate understanding of what riders demand from a class-leading sports tourer. |

Will it stop me from changing gear aggressively or letting the engine rev to redline? |
No, the YCC-S system will only change gear when you command it to. The only exception is that the intelligent system will not allow you to downshift with a gear that will over-rev, nor will it allow you to upshift into a gear that would be too low compared with the speed. |

Does it change gear faster than a traditional manual transmission? |
Gear changes completed using the YCC-S system are directly comparable with a traditional manual transmission, however, actual shift times vary depending on conditions. |

What if I make an emergency stop and don’t change gear? |
The YCC-S system will disengage the clutch and keep the engine running until you select neutral, or first gear to get moving again, just like if you’d pulled the clutch lever in yourself. In normal circumstances you just shift down the gearbox in the same way that you slow down using a conventional clutch. |

What if I turn the bike off while it is in gear? |
Your bike will remain in gear. To move the bike you must turn the key to the “ON” position. Make sure the side stand is in an upright position and change gear to neutral by hand or foot. |

What about doing U-turns? |
It doesn’t matter if you’re doing feetup U-turns or moving the FJR1300AS in confined spaces, the YCC-S will modulate the clutch as necessary, just like if you were holding the clutch yourself. Alternatively you can put it into neutral and move it that way. |

What will happen if I hold the throttle open and try to select first? |
The YCC-S is programmed to not allow a gear change from neutral to first if the engine is revving faster than 1,300 rpm, so there’s no danger. |

What happens if hand shift is selected but I try to change gear with my foot? |
When hand shift is selected the YCC-S allows you to change gear with hand or foot. If only foot shift is selected you cannot change gear with the hand shift switches unless you have switched it on. |
